Species name SILVER FIR
Scientific name
Abies alba Mill.
Micro/macroscopic and physical characteristics
Pale wood, undifferentiated duramen with clear annual rings. Large and particularly hard knots. Resiniferous channels not present in wood but in bark. Specific weight (U=12%) 0.46.
Use of wood
Not highly valued as it distorts on drying and the large hard knots make it difficult to work. Used in cement casings, carpentry and cheap furniture, hardboard and paper. Once the best trunks were used for ship masts.
